This International Women’s Day, Let’s Commit to Allyship

Synopsis:

Alyssa Wright’s article addresses issues surrounding equality for women of colour when it comes to salary disparities and equitable access. Wright describes an initiative called Future for Us, which seeks to tackle such issues by promoting improved investment in women of colour in the workplace. Additionally, Future for Us strives to change business culture in a way that supports women of colour in their work and achievements. Through the three pillars of Future for Us’s work (community, culture, and career,) better supports and equal opportunities for women of colour are hopefully on the horizon.

Rationale:

Alyssa Wright’s article is important as it outlines an initiative that promotes allyship and equality, which is unfortunately lacking in a large portion of businesses today. Wright emphasizes that intersectionality is important to consider when looking at the wage gap, as she states that when the wage gap shrinks for white women it grows for women of colour. Intersectionality is incredibly important to consider when tackling issues of inequality, as different individuals with different identities will experience oppression in vastly different ways. Furthermore, the three pillars of Future for Us’s work are great steps for any business to take in order to become better allies for people of colour.
