Intersectionality | Violence Against Women Learning Network

Synopsis: VAW Learning Network in Canada, analyses gender and anti-oppression to better explain the roots of violence against women. Intersectionality concept comprehends the experiences of women and the differences within communities, culture and backgrounds to explains how multiple elements interacts together to reinforce conditions of inequality and social exclusion. This paper also highlights the historical, social and economic context that has deeply affected the health and well-being of women in general and specifically Indigenous women in Canada. It examined with an overview of some of the health disparities between First Nations, Inuit and Métis women compared to others and the barriers that Indigenous women must overcome to address these disparities.  The paper provides some promising examples of legal, policy and program initiatives that address these health concerns.

Rationale: I am interested in this Learning Network in Canada, as it explains and connects intersectional factors that leads to violence against women. The wheel diagram shows how colonization, economics, history, social forces, globalization and many other factors contributes to the violence, discrimination and oppression against women.

The article by Harris, M. (2010). Transnational feminism and gender-based violence: Exploring the relationship between feminist theory and V-Day, highlights that transnational women movements are always trying to rally to end the violence against women, but it needs the collective efforts to accept and recognize the diversities and differences in backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, and goals that emerge from women around the globe and their unique communities. Transnational feminism as a practice, examines the multiple historical and contemporary intersections of race, gender, sexuality, economics, and nationality (among others) on a global scale.
