Immigration - The term Immigration came into light when it was first coined in the refugee movement after World War Two. Migrants had moved from their homes to help improve and revive the lost infrastructure, mainly in Europe after the colonization period of Africa and Asia. Currently, it is used as a legal term that determines whether a migrant can seek permanent residency or citizenship in another country. In other words, a non-citizen either voluntarily or involuntarily crosses borders to work or live permanently in a foreign place. The immigration process is done through a high profile evaluation of a migrant before their entry into a new country.
I chose this term as many people often get confused between the two terms, immigration and migration. Immigration, as stated above, gives a title that a person is deemed legally to live or work in a country. However, migration can be categorized in various factors of an individual, such as forcibly removing themselves from their hometown to come overseas due to climate change, domestic violence or government corruption. It can also be migrants who are documented and well educated who are wanting to settle down somewhere rather than their hometown. Therefore, I wanted others to understand that migration is the act of migrants crossing borders with an identity and status. Whereas, immigration is the mandatory legal proceeding for new migrants. Hence, it is important for every citizen to educate themselves on how the processes of immigration work in their country.
