Capitalism

Definition: Capitalism is an economic and social system that destroys land, people, cultures and replaces it with wealth and land ownership. It is often times disproportionally distributed in the hands of the wealthy elites (Walia, 2013). It highlights the importance of private ownership, prices, competition and the free market. It is a social system that embodies social laws, institutions and government (Sternberg, 2015). This has undermined the stability of many different countries and communities around the world causing people to migrate and find work elsewhere. Capitalism can be viewed as what causes alienation, exploitation and poverty. It has been responsible for mass destruction of the environment as well as social and communal ties (Walia, 2013).

Rationale: The term capitalism is important to understand when studying transnational feminism and undoing boarder imperialism because capitalism is one of the main reasons why western views and formations has been entering into other countries and communities around the world causing environmental and societal damage (Sternberg, 2015). Capitalism defines our existence and we cannot understand ourselves and the problems we are facing as a society if we do not understand the current system we partake and live in. Capitalism is the root of globalization which can connect to neoliberalism, globalization, and migration. The neoliberalism globalization ties with the commodification of the various aspects of life and enables people and services to cross borders. The definition of capitalism given is one of the main roots of the current global issues that affect our world. In order to understand the transnational feminism movement, we need to understand what capitalism is to create broader and deeper connections.
