New $1B border strategy will get tough on irregular asylum seekers

Updated: Apr 1, 2019

This article addresses a promised plan from the Canadian federal government that will cost 1.18 billion dollars. This plan is a five-year plan that will improve border security. It will also help speed up the process of asylum seeker claims. There is now an irregular number of migrants and a larger number of refugees coming to Canada. This larger amount of migrants and refugees makes the processing time longer. With this new plan the government will be able to process everything faster and more efficiently. This news article relates to the topic of migrants and refugee status seekers.

This is an important news article because it is a recent article that talks about upcoming plans to change border security and speed up the process of asylum claims. In class we recently watched the video Asylum by Gary Beitel. This documentary documented stories of three asylum seekers in Canada and what they go through during this process. It showed that the process for many of these people can be very long. They had to wait in Canada until their claim was processed and they would always have a fear of deportation until they gained refugee status. If there is a larger amount of people seeking asylum in Canada it is important that the government makes this process quicker and better. This article is relevant because it addresses the need for better border security and faster asylum seeker claim processing.
