5th World Conference on Women is an Aspirational Goal

Updated: Mar 28, 2019

Synopsis:

There has been discussion by a range of thinkers in academia and in the global arena of women's movement makers about the unfinished agenda on women's rights that was left hanging since the UN World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. The outcome document, the Declaration and Platform for Action was recognized as an effective blueprint for advancing women's rights. This art piece, “5th World Conference on Women is an Aspirational Goal” was created in direct response to the murmurs of another World Conference on Women, questioning if this is the correct platform after 25 years of idleness.

Rationale:

We chose to create an art piece that addresses the UN World Conference on Women since there has not been a convening in 25 years since the 4th Conference in Beijing. This piece questions the validity and transnational nature of a conference whose commitment to the advancement of women's rights has become outdated and does not propose structural changes in the economic domain to reduce gender, race and other inequalities. The text featured in the piece is written in English only, with a disclaimer that reads “this document is only available in English please translate for yourself” to reflect the lack of intersectionality and consultation required to host an effective and inclusive world conference on women. We found art and posters provocative for students operating within the academy who may begin to contribute to contemporary discourses in regard to the importance of world conference on women or to produce an alternative platform that can better address the globalized world we live in today.
