Entry:
Our Transnational Feminist learning journey has directed our minds to question current power structures that originated from and rest on myths that manipulate the masses. As shared at the Walrus Talks on May 23rd, 2017, Canada: A Creation Story by Rebecca Thomas provides an upfront, meaningful and touching account of Canada’s colonialist history that is necessary to be heard in order to recognize our Nation-State’s unsavory historical truths. Most importantly, this poem provides a narrative of strength and perseverance that exists within our Indigenous community and can be channeled to foster significant change that reaches out to invite others in “writing the next chapter.”
Rationale:
I chose this work as it is a succinct homage to the struggle and suffering the Indigenous people of this land endured as a result of the colonization of Turtle Island. This work is relevant to our course’s exploration of Transnational Feminism as it illustrates the consequences of dominance and power in such a tangible, heart wrenching and harsh manner that inevitably stirs up a desire for change.
It is imperative that we acknowledge how we got here, that we see the consequences of our power structures and that we expose injustices as a tactic for positive change, alternate ways of being, and new ways to inhabit and interact with each other and the land. After all, there was a world before capitalism infiltrated our lifeblood and so we mustn’t underestimate the power of our alliances and choices.
