Map of Support Services to Mig. Workers (Domestic Work)

Synopsis:

This resource is a map of support services for migrant workers. It was produced by Migrant Workers Rights – Canada, and mainly focuses on services available in Canada as a tool for migrant workers to access communities and advocate groups working in their interest. First published in 2015 and updating twice a year, from looking at the map one can see that while Migrant worker support services exists they are largely limited to heavy metropolitan areas. The maps target groups for this map is immigrant workers, researchers, unions, and NGOs/community groups/solidarity networks. This map specifically focuses on domestic workers, and classifies different support systems as groups able to facilitate social integration, groups able to provide support to access labor rights (including legal rights), and groups providing support only to Filipino migrant workers. The map includes various ways to contact these organizations, and include the languages the organization specializes in.

Rationale:

I found this map important because of obvious reasons- it works as a tool to make services, communities, and resources aimed towards migrant workers more accessible and known to temporary foreign domestic workers. In most situations migrant workers have unstable or very little resources available to them, so this works as a grassroots way to dismantle this. Additionally, this map is important because (while it is still a valuable resource) it causes the reader to recognize the scarcity for support systems out there for migrant domestic workers. There are very few services offered outside of Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. While this resource is a bit dated, I find it still relevant. A map such as this helps to ‘centralize and distribute information’ and also draws attention to the fact that the migrant workers are discouraged and/or have a structural lack of access to their rights and resources.
