Family Separation Policy and A Call for Reform

In this article posted on CNN, the Trump administration’s family separation policy is discussed after his administration announced its end of the practice of separating undocumented families at the border. This practice of separating families came at no benefit to US Department of Homeland Security but served as a fear tactic which devastated countless number of families and shocked the entire world. The administration’s “zero tolerance” policy took full effect when over 2,000 children were separated from their parents at the border.

According to the United Nations, the practice of separating children from migrant families is in direct violation of international law. In response to this, the Trump administration pulled out of the United Nations human rights council in order to continue the vile practice of separating children from their families. Not only was this act unspeakable, it was also done out of pure arrogance and pride. The administrations “zero tolerance” policy is not only extremely problematic in itself, it leads to overwhelmingly unspeakable situations. “Zero tolerance” creates a culture of apathy and cruelty which deeply affects the lives of thousands seeking refuge in America. By targeting the most vulnerable and helpless populations, the system of oppression that is the United States government terrorizes the lives of people whose sole goal is have a chance at a better life. Because of the contrast between countries that a capitalistic society has created, the wealth of the United States was built upon the poverty of other countries. To maintain dominance over these countries, policies such as Trump’s family separation act as tactics of oppression and fear. The security of the nation does not rely upon fear or cruelty, but because of deep seeded bigotry and prejudice against “foreign” bodies, the continuation of the terrorization of immigrants continues in modern day America.

Rationale:

The importance of this blog entry to the movement of transnational feminism is its recognition of the modern day effects border imperialism continues to have on the lives of immigrants in 2019. The concept of harmful policies is one that needs to be kept at the forefront of the conversation of transnational feminism. Awareness of policies such as the United States’ family separation policy, deeply harm those seeking refuge in countries other than their own. Unfortunately, this policy is just one of many that oppress the human rights of families and persons seeking asylum. Because of the intense public pressure placed on the United States government, this policy was revoked. However there is still much reform that needs to be done.
